About the Artist

I first started painting as a senior in college (1971), but took an extended hiatus from painting while my wife and I raised a family and I pursued a career in industry. With our two boys grown and on their own, I picked up the brushes again in 2008.
My education and background is not at all typical for an artist. I have a BS in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University and an MBA in Operations Management also from Rutgers. Although this background may seem like an odd education for an artist, remember that Leonardo Da Vinci was an engineer as well as a formidable artist. I believe that engineering and art can be complementary.
I live in Silver Spring, Maryland with Sandy, my wife and partner of 49 years. In 2008, I retired from a 37 ½ year career with ExxonMobil and have been devoting more of my attention to art. I like this “right brain” journey for the second half of my life after a “left brain” career in industry.
Landscapes in oil and more recently acrylics have been my primary subjects and medium over the past several years but I have also done still lives and portraits. I have taken various painting and drawing courses with some very excellent instructors at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria. Several of my landscape works have been accepted in juried shows including The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia (Aug '09), the Young at Art Show in Alexandria (Oct '09) and the Treasury of Art Show in Vienna, Virginia (Nov '09, Nov’10, Nov ’11, Nov’12, Nov ‘13) the Rittenhouse Fine Art Show in Philadelphia (Sept’10), and the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival in Reston (May ’11). I have also been invited to show my work at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg and several times at the Burwell Morgan Mill Art Show. I am a former member of the Artist’s Undertaking Gallery in Occoquan.
I do portraits of pets and people in graphite or charcoal on commision as well as landscapes in oil or acrylic. Many of my works are available in high quality giclee reproductions. If you are interested please see "Contact the Artist" and send an email to me.
Although my training and background are primarily in engineering and business, I strive to bring my talents as an artist and a full rich life of experience to my artwork and I approach each new canvas as a challenge and a fresh beginning.
